The University of Alabama Schools of Dentistry and Medicine guided by a long-standing commitment to education, research, and patient care have been nationally recognized and are influential leaders in the dental and medical fields. Specifically, the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery has had a great historical tradition of producing experienced and scholarly surgeons well trained in the full scope of Oral and Maxillofacial surgery.
The program was founded in 1948 by Dr. Joseph Lazansky, and a solid education and treatment base was established under his visionary leadership. Well known residents include Drs. David Hall, Charles McCallum, Charles Alling, Thomas Jones, Victor Matukas, Peter Waite and Patrick Louis to name a few. These individuals have been and continue to be leaders in our specialty.
General Information
The Advanced Educational Program in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery conducted by the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the University of Alabama School of Dentistry is designed to meet the requirements of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. The program is accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation, a specialized accrediting body recognized by the Council on Postsecondary Accreditation and the United States Department of Education.
The program leads to certification in oral and maxillofacial surgery and a M.D. degree from the University of Alabama School of Medicine. Acceptance to the program is by both the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and the School of Medicine. The University of Alabama School of Medicine will sponsor those applicants who have been accepted in the program for the National Medical Boards.
The Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Residency Program is a participant of the Matching program sponsored by the American Association of Oral Maxillofacial Surgeons and monitored by the Committee on Residency Education and Training. The administration of the Matching Program, including the performance of the match, is carried out by National Matching Services as an independent contractor.
The Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Residency Program also is a participant in the Postdoctoral Application Support Service (PASS) central application service sponsored by the American Association of Dental Schools.
The training year begins the last week of June and applications are due by October 15 of the preceding calendar year. Resident hospital house staff orientation programs begin the third week of June. Notifications of the selected trainees for the program are made at the earliest practical moment, usually in February, depending on the results of the match.
Stipends for Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery residents are equal to those of other house staff officers in the Medical Center. These are scaled to the average for medical and surgical services in hospitals in the Southeastern United States. Additional funds are provided by the department staff for educational purposes.
No stipens are available for the period the resident is registered in the School of Medicine. The student is also required to pay tuition and fees according to the then current policies pertaining to medical students. Vaccination for Hepatitis B is required to treat patients in the dental school.
There are a maximum of three funded positions available each year to enter the Advanced Educational Program in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. Each Oral and Maxillofacial resident is encouraged to obtain a general dentistry license in the State of Alabama to assist in the delivery of health services to patients in pursuit of his/her training program. Residents are prohibited from practicing dentistry or other employment during the time of the training program period.
