Tim Heaven, DDS, MS
During the summer between his first and second years of dental school Dr. Heaven was a National Institute of Dental Research Summer Fellow at the University of Virginia, School of Engineering and Applied Science, Charlottesville, Virginia. He came to UAB in 1976 as an instructor in dentistry and National Library of Medicine Fellow in the Division of Biophysical Sciences. After completing a Master's degree in Computer Science he joined the School of Dentistry faculty full time. Clinical teaching has been a continuous responsibility since joining the faculty. His graduate committee participation totals 20 for the Masters program in Dentistry. His research work in radiography began 13 years ago with the theme of better diagnosis through quantitative measurements. This work has resulted in the publication of 22 articles. Six undergraduate and three graduate students have worked in his laboratory. Three have received awards from outside the school for their work. With his background in computer science he developed numerous administrative and educational software applications for the school. This software was recognized outside of UAB by its adoption at two other schools and an award of hardware from Intel Corporation. He has served as Director of Computer Services for 9 years during which time desktop computing and networking was introduced into the school. His committee assignments include numerous School, Medical Center, University, National, and International Committees. Currently, he is the Chair of the UAB Faculty Senate.
